Democratic congressional candidate Monica Vernon observed the 80th anniversary of Social Security by sharing stories about the Depression-era retirement program with current retirees.
"I think about my daughters." said Vernon. "If one of them would become pregnant and choose to raise the child, have it, raise it, whatever, just being pregnant could get her fired from a position."
"I mean this is a ‘Hate Bill,” said Vernon. “This is a bill that legitimizes and legalizes discrimination and we just wanted to call out the Congressman on it. I think if you do these things and aren't called out, you keep on doing them so we think it's real important to call him out on it."
Today, the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building Trades Council AFL-CIO voted unanimously to endorse Monica Vernon's campaign for Congress in Iowa's 1st congressional district.
